A First Quarter Moon in Capricornus

November 19th, 2015

The Moon reaches first quarter tonight in the constellation of Capricornus, the Sea Goat. Capricornus is one of the dim watery constellations of autumn. Others include Delphinus the Dolphin, Cetus the Whale, Pisces the Fish, Pisces Austrinus (the southern fish), Aquarius the Water Bearer and Eridanus, the River.

No one really knows why these constellations are all associated with water but many of them have been watery based for thousands of years and across different cultures.

Maybe it’s because the weather is turning cooler and, consequently wetter. Unless, of course, you live in the southern hemisphere where the seasons are turning to Summer – or here in southern California, where it hardly rains at all!
