March 20th, 2017 – Morning Sky
Today is officially the first day of spring but you can catch the summer stars rising in the hours before the dawn. In particular, look out for the last quarter Moon as it approaches the stars of Sagittarius, the Archer. Appearing nearby is Saturn, the most distant planet easily visible with the unaided eye.
Adapted from 2017: The Night Sky Sights (available in the U.S., and the United Kingdom) and 2017: An Astronomical Year (available in the U.S., and the United Kingdom.) For an easy guide to learn the constellations in the night sky, try my book, Signposts to the Stars (see image and links below.)
